Buying insurance is different for a condominium unit owner than for owners of conventional homes or even renters. This is the reason Roger uses a special unit owners policy.

Your community association may insure the entire building and common elements under a single package policy. This is called an association master policy. The condo’s master policy will insure the basic buildings (walls, roof, floors) but leaves you the responsibility of insuring appliances, carpeting, cabinets, wall coverings, and other items in your unit (in some instances this may include your interior walls).
With this in mind, your condo insurance does just what the master policy will not do. It will also cover you for alterations or additions you made at your own expense, or if you increased the value of certain aspects (higher quality carpet) you would be covered for the difference.
